Marriage License

Typically marriage licenses are issued to applicants on the spot.  A marriage license is generally valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. In most states, blood tests are not required.  Applicants must be over 18 years of age. Check below for additional State to State requirements.

Couples normally can complete and submit an application for a marriage license online.

Walk in applicants are taken on a first come first served basis.  Afternoons and Fridays are the busiest times and processing time is likely to be longer.

Payment can be made by cash, personal check, cashier's check, money order, or ATM/Debit card (there may be a usage fee).

You should be prepared to:

  • Appear together in person
  • Present one form of valid identification (driver's license, passport, or certified copy of a birth certificate).
  • Provide a certified copy of the Final Judgment of Divorce if divorce was final within the last 90 days.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

What is the difference between a Marriage License and a Marriage Certificate? The marriage certificate is more of a keepsake.  You will receive an original of both the certified license and the marriage certificate. This can take anywhere from to two weeks to a month.   Additional copies of the marriage license (there is an extra fee) are required for official name changes with Social Security and your Driver's license.
